What is a Co-op?

A cooperative is a business owned and operated by its members. It is democratically run and is governed by a board of directors elected by the membership.

Among the most important functions of the Board is to appoint and evaluate a general manager. At its 4/22/2015 meeting, the Board decided to appoint Sean Fitzgerald as the Co-op's new general manager. The pictures on the right show Sean with celebratory cake and with members of the Board.

The Phoenix Earth Food Co-op is guided by cooperative principles:

  • Open and voluntary membership
  • Democratic control
  • Return of surplus to membership
  • Limited return on investment
  • Cooperation among cooperatives
  • Member education
  • Concern for community
